Featuring Performances from Detroit Johnny & The Delta Soul Children.
Born in 1944 in rural Columbia County, Manis “Detroit Johnny” Johnson began playing professionally as a bluesman before he reached his teens, performing as a guitarist in Robert Nighthawk’s band. Johnson later lived and worked several years in Michigan, where he earned the stage name “Detroit Johnny.” He returned to Arkansas, eventually settling in Pine Bluff. A veteran of the Pine Bluff blues scene, Detroit Johnny has long been associated with the Port City Blues Society and has appeared on numerous occasions as an entertainer at the DCC.
The newly formed nonprofit Arkansas Originals is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural signature program: the Arkansas River Delta Blues Trail, a heritage initiative designed to preserve, celebrate, and amplify the rich musical history along the Arkansas River Delta. The Arkansas River Delta Blues Trail is a heritage initiative with historical markers and sites across the Delta region, focusing on musicians like Bobby Rush and Big Bill Broonzy, alongside the related Delta Heritage Trail State Park, a 47.5-mile developing rail-trail from Lexa to Arkansas City that will eventually reach 84.5 miles, offering cycling and hiking through natural beauty and cultural sites.
